Maroon 5 – The Pop/Rock Sensation

“Caffeine is like a really attractive girl that has nothing to say. You get all jacked up on it and then you're left feeling hollow and empty. You drink eight cups of Starbucks; you might as well have done cocaine” – Adam Levine, singer Maroon 5

The Long and Winding Road

Maroon 5 have built their success on relentless touring and as an opening act for some of Rock’s best! Opening for the likes of The Rolling Stones and John Mayer have given them the world wide exposure they deserve. From Grunge beginning to melodic rock/pop, Maroon 5 have become a global success. The raw sexual imagery in their videos has only helped to get the MTV generation support. Their soulful music and catchy riffs have made them a multi-platinum selling band with a global fan following.

Maroon 5 have also won a Grammy for Best New Artist. The band is considered to be the most successful artist of the digital download era. Their music draws as much from the melodies of Bee Gees and Stevie Wonder to the rock sensibilities of Red Hot Chili Peppers and The Police. It is this sort of amalgamation of different genres of music with catchy riffs and somewhat cliched lyrics which have made the band sell 15 million albums. The bands lead singer and primary song writer Adam Levine is one of the hottest rock stars on MTV.

The Early Grunge Years

Close friends Adam Levine (vocals/guitar), Ryan Dusick (drums) Jesse Carmichael (keyboards) and Mickey Madden(bass), started playing while attending the same school in LA. The band they formed was called Kara’s Flowers. The band started recording demos and before the end of 1995 was playing at the iconic Whiskey a Go Go club. They were quickly singed by Reprise Records and under the production of Rob Cavallo (Green Day), they recorded their first album “The Fourth World” in 1997. Sounding a lot like Brit Pop, the album was a commercial flop and the band was completely devastated.

Even though Adam and Jesse moved to the East Coast to pursue college, Ryan and Mickey stayed back at UCLA. The band still vowed to return after college. It was during the time in NYC that Adam and Jesse discovered hip-hop and pop music. Something they had never been exposed to. They knew a sound which fuses different genres would be successful. On returning the LA and with new energy the band recorded new material with a brand new musical direction. They were signed on by small label Octone Records’ after changing the name the band recorded and released their first album. They also added a new lead guitar player James Valentine to the group

Songs about Jane

The album “Songs about Jane” was released in mid-2002. And after relentless touring for almost 2 years, their album reached the top 10 on US charts. Their song “This Love” with the sexy video was a major hit on MTV. The band also released 3 other top 10 singles “Harder to Breathe”, “She will be Loved” and “Sunday Morning”. The song “She will be loved” with another sexy video this time featuring Adam with Kelly Preston (wife of John Travolta) was another massive hit.

The pop melody of the song with its opening vocals sung on a catchy guitar riff breaks into a strong rhythm section was among the bands finest moment. The album has sold almost 5 million records in the US alone. Lyrically incorporates sexual and love themes. The album name is derived from Adam’s girlfriend Jane.

The bands new found fame saw them go on a tour for almost a year. Building on the success of the album, the band got the prestigious opening slot for the Bigger Bang US tour of The Rolling Stones.

The Sophomore Effort

After the departure of founder member Ryan Dusick (drummer), the band recruited Matt Flynn as a permanent member. The band recorded the vaguely titled “It Won't Be Soon Before Long”. The first single was released “Makes me Wonder” which debut outside the Top 50 but within but within a few weeks it skyrocketed to No.1 The high anticipation for the album led it to the No.1 slot on the US charts.

After opening for their favorite The Police who were on a reunion tour they went on the “It Won't Be Soon Before Long World Tour". The second album was a tighter sounding album using heavy production. Critically the album was appreciated more than the first one. The music is more ambitious and every effort had been taken to ensure it is a bigger hit. Working with ensemble of producers, the band took almost 2 years to record the album.

The album has sold 7 million copies world-wide. The world tour was another success and Adam Levine and the boys worked with hip-hop sensation Rihana as a collaboration which won them a Grammy nomination

The Future

The band will be releasing their third album in 2010 which has been produced by the legendary pop/rock producer James “Mutt” Lange
