Onyx
Onyx
Brooklyn Born
Rap, or hip hop, as it is also known, had started to take hold as an up and coming style of music shared by many in the more urban areas at the time although it has become a household genre of music of the present. After they would get their rhythm and style, the group would start recording their music in the late 1980’s and be one of the major contributors to the hip hop world of today.
A Lighter Shade
From this single, the group would go on to sign a deal with Def Jam records and would create their first full length studio album called Bacdafucup, which was released in 1993. The record was praised by the rap community and was considered a great commercial success for the group and would receive heavy airplay of many of the tracks across the radio waves as well as MTV.
However, the group did experience a growing number of people who did not like the display of sexual and violent tendencies of Onyx that was displayed on stage at their shows and in their lyrics. They would be deemed as a threat by many groups including the NAACP. The group would continue to perform in spite of the growing efforts to curb their shows and go on to release their next album in 1995.
Successful Colors
After the album, the group would not release another record for quite some time although they would make some appearances in movies of the late 1990’s such as Sunset Park and Dead Presidents. 1998 would see the release of their third full length studio album called Shut’Em Down and would have a number of appearances by other up and coming hip hop artists of the time. The album was a commercial success and created an avenue for the artists to begin releasing works to solid foundations of fans.
They would continue releasing albums well into the 2000’s after signing with a different company called Koch records. Fans of the group can visit their official website where they may find free music downloads or music available for internet screening.
