Avril Lavigne- The Punk Girl Mania

"Why should I care what other people think of me? I am who I am. And who I wanna be." Avril Lavigne

Avril in Wonderland

Avril Lavigne took the world by a storm, her skater dude fashion, cool teen-age angst lyrics and her media profile has made her a superstar. Avril Lavigne has also started a fashion line, fragrance business and a movie career. She has sold nearly 50 million albums world wide in an astonishing career and yet she has not even 30 yet. Her commercial success has seen her transform from the juvenile punk image to a princess. Avril is also a philanthropist supporting campaigns such as War Child, US Campaign for Burma and Amnesty International. Billboard has named her the 28th most important artist of the current decade. This acclaim has been given based on cultural relevance and record sales. In 2010 she has recorded the song "Alice" for the soundtrack of Tim Burton's film Alice in Wonderland.

The Canadian Connection

Avril Lavignewas born and raised in Canada. She had always showed an interest in signing and music. She won music contest for a chance to sing with Shania Twain as the latter was going on her first major tour. Lavigne did appear with Shania Twain on stage. By Nov 2000 she signed Arista records and is recording her first album in New York. The record label had an idea of providing Avril with a bunch of writers but she refused and wanted to write songs all by herself. Her influences ranged from Janis Joplin to Oasis. Her song writing was quite natural, expressing her feelings about her life, her relationships at the tender age of 17. Sometimes a bit clichéd but never boring and always very spunky!

Her first album "Let Go" was pop gem. Backed by a powerful band and some cool videos the album made it to the Top 10 at US charts. The album has sold nearly 16 million copies world wide. Brilliantly produced, album was a 17 year old girl being reaching out to the world with her sensitivity, anger and talent. Her drive to be taken seriously and not another teen-pop idol is evident from the track "Complicated". This overnight sensation went on a world tour promoting her album and appeared extensively on video music television. Her live shows saw her play the guitar and her "cool rebel" image with that infectious smile was perfect.

The Sophomore and Beyond

After the phenomenal success of her debut album, there was intense pressure on Lavigne for the follow-up. Under My Skin, released in 2004 was critically acclaimed as her best yet. Avril drive to be forgotten as a juvenile brat and be embraced as a serious songwriter is quite a tough asks when you are 19 years old. But she delivers and her raw songwriting on love, heartbreak and everything in between is brutally honest. Of course she is still a brat. The album debuts at No.1 on both sides of the Atlantic and has sold 10 million copies world wide.

She also went on a world tour starting with performing at malls in the US. The world tall called Bonez Tour is reference to a question she was asked on what is under her skin to which she had replied Bonez. The tour takes her across North America, Japan, Australia, Europe and even Africa. That nearly two year jaunt is very successful and cements has superstar status.

Her third album "The Best Damn Thing" released in April of 2007 is another platinum selling effort. It debuts no.1 in the US and UK.

Though the album is not a complete change in pace but it seems Avril has an understated humor side as well. Happily sprinkling profanity and four letter words all over her album. Plagiarism allegations for "Girlfriend" aside the catchy punk pop tunes continue and so does the clichéd lyrics. Commercially the album is not as big as the last two efforts and it shows. The album does sound a bit rushed, but she has the mallrats loving every bit of it.

The tour is another long one playing for almost the entire of 2007 and visiting Mexico and the usual familiar territories. But she does manage to play "The Garden" during the promotional leg. The tour sees her play bigger venues go deeper into Asia where she enjoys the most die-hard fans. Playing stadiums like in Shanghai and Tokyo

Avril Lavigne has truly established herself as one of the biggest solo artists in the world. The highly anticipated fourth album is due in the summer of 2010.
