Can you tell me where my country lies…
Forming in the year of 1967, the group called Genesis would go on to be one of the world’s leading rock n’ roll groups of the twentieth century. Peter Gabriel and Tony Banks would form the band while students at a charter school in England and would bring their song across many oceans to the millions of adoring fans.
They would release numerous albums but it would be until 1969 before they would become renowned in their home country of England. They would go on to have numerous members of the group that would include outright legends that would live on in music history.
With the trials and tribulations of the 1960’s, the group Genesis would create a band that would use these themes to inspire thought in the individual and look for true meaning during this time. They would release their first album in 1969 called From Genesis to Revelation under the Decca Records label. The first single off of the album was called The Silent Sun and would generate very little buzz.
Genesis: The Beginning
The album did not meet expectations as it sold rather poorly although it would be their debut album. The group would not find success overnight and would embark on a small tour to try to generate interest in the album. After their tour, they would go back into the studio to release their next album called Trespass. The album would have numerous progressive rock themes with odd time changes and rolling melodies.
The group would go on to release a live album in 1973 that would sell better than their previous albums but had yet to get a taste of the starlight that they so sought. Genesis would go back to the studio and release Selling England By the Pound later in 1973 and the record would generate some acclaim from leading critics of the day. The album would produce one single that would reach number seventeen on the United Kingdom pop charts.
Again the group would go on tour in support of the album but their work ethic lead them once again into the studio to release a double album called The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. Shortly after the release of the album, original band member Peter Gabriel would decided it was time to look for his own solo career; however, the band decided to keep on without him.
After the departure, the group would go on to release their next album called A Trick of the Tail now with lead singer Phil Collins. The album sounded better than most of their previous records due to its production but still did not generate through the roof sales. Many would relate this to the fact that Peter Gabriel had just released the song Solsbury Hill, which took the band out of the limelight.
Their next albums would generate a wider array of audiences but it was not until the mid 1980’s that they would see the fruits of their labor. The group was back in the studio and Collins had now progressed as their leader. His voice was poised for a break through and the group would get it with the release of the album called Invisible Touch. The album would contain five Top 5 singles in the United States alone.
The only song to ever reach a number one position for Genesis would be the title track on the album. In the United Kingdom, the group would be the only group to sell out Wembley stadium four nights a row in 1987. The group would go on hiatus for a while after the departure of Phil Collins and come back in the late 1990’s.
