INXS

A little less screaming…

From the Land Down Under

The group that would be known to the world as INXS would bring their new sound to audiences across the globe. The band started with members Andrew Fariss, Michael Hutchence, Kent Kerny, and Neil Sanders, who decided to form the group called Doctor Dolphin under the supervision of Andrew Fariss, their high school classmate. In 1977, the group would begin playing with a few other temporary members to form the group called the Farris Brothers, that would later be known as INXS.

Early Works

The group would begin playing around their localized area at high school parties and eventually moving on to college hot spots and nightclubs. The group would release their first album called Whale Beach in 1977, which they would sell after they played their localized shows. It was summed up by Farriss’ father when he would go on to say that the audience was asleep at the end of the show and it may very well have been due to the fact that most people at the concert were stoned.

When the Farriss family would uproot itself and travel to Perth Australia in 1978, the rest of the band would follow. They would take on the name of The Vegetables and would shortly return to the city of Sydney after only ten months of being away. Upon their return, the group would produce their first demo after they were approached by a manager of another band. The group would go on a supporting tour of the band called Midnight Oil and it was then that they decided to change their name to INXS.

The band would go on to sign a record deal that would give them the liberty to create five albums under the independent record label called Deluxe Records, which was ran by the former manager of AC/DC. The group would release their first single in 1980 called We Are the Vegetables that would be release in France and Australia but not the United States. They would also go on to record their first album that was self titled at Trafalgar Studios with a budget or right around ten thousand dollars Australian. The group was off and running.

Excessiveness

After the group’s first album, the group would go on tour in support of the record and gain exposure across Australia and venture in to European territory as well. The supporting tour would prove useful for album sales and eventually the record would achieve the status of gold, selling numerous copies worldwide. This would prove to be a new style of rock n’ roll with an influence of pop, ska, and new wave and would also prove to be popular with new trends of the decade including skateboarding due to its heavy influence of punk rock.

They would release a cover single of the song called Loved One, which would prove to be a smart move as the song would make it to the Top 20 in Australia. The single would afford the group the opportunity to record their first full length album called Underneath the Colours, which would climb to the number fifteen position in Australia. The group would start to become restless and many during this time would start their own side projects; however, the group would come together for one more album that contained the Top 40 hit New Sensation.

The song would gain copious air time on radio waves throughout Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The group would be known for this final hit before their demise. Fans of the group may use the internet to find free music downloads or songs for internet screening. The group has said to be in the reunion works and may be opening an official website soon.
